More Exercise Can Boost Men’s Sex Life
Study links exercise to better erectile and sexual function in men
More frequent exercise can do wonders for a man’s sexual health.
Men who exercised more often have better erectile function and sexual function according to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
The findings are not new, but the study is the first to associate exercise benefits to better sexual health in a group of black and white men. In previous studies, black men were underrepresented. The study involved a large percentage of blacks and found exercise benefits for all men, regardless of race.
Researchers surveyed close to 300 men to find out whether exercise is linked to better erectile and sexual function and the minimum amount of exercise associated with better sexual health.
The men reported their activities and researchers calculated the total exercise time and intensity using a measurement called metabolic equivalent of task (oxygen used/energy burned) (MET) hours per week.
Researchers then placed the men into categories ranging from sedentary (three or less MET hours/week) to highly active (18 or more MET hours/week).
The men also reported their sexual function, including the ability to have erections, orgasms, and the quality and frequency of orgasms and sexual function in general.
While the results don’t prove that exercise caused better sexual function, men who were highly active scored higher on surveys that measure erectile/sexual function. Exercising more than 18 MET hours/week was highly associated with better sexual function, regardless of race.
A total of 18 METS can be achieved by combining exercises with different intensities, but is the equivalent of two hours of strenuous exercise (such as running or swimming), 3.5 hours of moderate exercise, or six hours of light exercise.
Men who were less active reported lower levels of sexual function. Diabetes, older age, past or current smoking and heart disease were other factors that contributed to lower sexual function. These factors can make it difficult to exercise more frequently.
The researchers caution that exercise should be tailored for each person. ‘When it comes to exercise, there is no one-size-fits-all approach,’ said Stephen Freedland, MD and co-author of the study, in a news release. ‘However, we are confident that even some degree of exercise, even if less intense, is better than no exercise at all.’
Sexercise connection
Better erectile and sexual function make it easy to enjoy the Sexercise lifestyle because sex increases heart rate, burns calories and is aerobic exercise.
Sexercise is an active lifestyle that provides couples with ways to combine sex and exercise with healthy food choices to keep fit, have fun and maintain happiness.
Sexual intercourse burns between 69 to 100 calories in a half hour. It is more fun than exercise outside the bedroom and sex can count as another workout option in a couple’s fitness plan for a healthy lifestyle.
